My vlogging has been so therapeutic, and so far this blog has been too. It feels wonderful to have a place where all of the different strands of my life can come together. It’s also intimidating, because that means that I have to take ownership of every strand of my life for every audience (I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how being a woman can make this especially difficult, and I’ll link an especially well-articulated essay on the subject below). I’ve reached the point where that challenge feels invigorating rather than intimidating though, which also feels pretty awesome.
This Starling has so much meaning for me. The starling to me represents hope and mindfulness and positivity and a dedication to wellbeing, something extraordinary existing among the ordinary. I hope that this will be a space of truth, joy, and awareness. Life is complicated. Let’s treat each other gently.
Here’s my very first vlog (I’ve gotten way better at them by now, I think/hope), which explains more about my choice of *This Starling*.
*Claire Vaye Watkins’ essay “On Pandering” was eye-opening for me. A sample: “Let us use our words and our gazes to make the invisible visible. Let us tell the truth. Let us, each of us, write things that are uncategorizable, rather than something that panders to and condones and codifies those categories.”
